About

Praised for being a “fine musician and a great leader”, Dr. Michael Romans enjoys a diverse career as a dynamic performer, chamber musician, concertmaster, and teacher.

Hailing from Springfield, Virginia, Michael began studying violin and viola at the age of 10 under the instruction of former Louisville Orchestra violist, James Batts. Michael Romans earned his Doctorate in Violin Performance at the University of Michigan where he served as a Graduate Student Instructor under the guidance of Fabiola Kim and Danielle Belen. In 2020, he earned his Masters Degree from U of M as a recipient of the prestigious full merit scholarship. Michael also holds a Bachelor’s degree from Indiana University with degrees in Violin Performance from the Jacobs School of Music and Business Studies from the Kelley School of Business.

Performing chamber music with friends is a great love and constant source of inspiration for Michael.  Michael is a founding member of the Continuum Chamber Collective; an ensemble that was formed during the COVID-19 pandemic when music could only be heard from 6 feet away. The Continuum Chamber Collective spotlights underperformed music and presents it at the highest artistic quality by balancing contemporary works with well- loved classical repertoire. In 2022, Continuum premiered Akshaya Avril Tucker’s, “Could Only Be Fantasy” for oboe, violin, viola, and cello, and the New York City premiere of both Lisa Hefter’s Carbon Fiber String Quartet and Jie Yang’s duo, Two Mountain Tunes and Dances.

Michael has appeared in music festivals across the country as a well as internationally. Most recently, Michael appeared as co- concertmaster of the Aspen Conducting Academy Orchestra. He was concertmaster of the National Repertory Orchestra for the 2021 season and performed Bruch’s Violin Concerto No. 1. He was also co-associate concertmaster of the Schleswig-Holstein Festival Orchestra performing in venues across Germany including the Berlin Konzerthaus and the Elbphilharmonie. Other notable festival appearances include performances in Carnegie Hall for the 50th anniversary of the New York String Orchestra and Sarasota Music Festival.

Michael Romans is the newest addition to the Air Force Strings based in Washington D.C. He frequently performs at the White House, the Capitol, and various embassy venues performing for foreign dignitaries, members of Congress and the President of the United States. Prior to joining the Air Force Strings, Michael was a core member of the Virginia Symphony Orchestra, concertmaster of the Adrian Symphony Orchestra, and section violinist in the Ann Arbor and Lansing Symphony Orchestras.
